I can move the label or caption on an object by dragging, but the range of movement seems to be confined to a circular path in the leftmost region of the object. Is there any way of "freeing" it so that I can position it anywhere? Or should I just hide it and use a text object?

I can't confirm 'in the leftmost region' and experimenting with captions I experienced a rather large margin as well for a function, a point and a segment (see picture). But indeed if this isn't enough, you can use texts.
