Ideas for the "perfect forum"

Simona Riva shared this idea 4 months ago
Under Consideration

Hi everyone!

There are plans to improve our Forum, and I would like to collect your ideas about how a perfect forum should be.

This is, so far, my wishlist:

- fast and robust

- multi-language: effective inbuilt translator that allows us to understand posts in any language

- LaTeX compliant

- possibility to attach the most used file formats (.doc/docx, .xls, .pdf, images, ggb)

- effective Search engine

Please feel free to add your suggestions. The Website Team will surely listen to our wishes when implementing a new, and better forum.

Hello everybody,

I agree with Simona's propositions.

I just want to add a request about an issue I notice sometimes in the forum :

When I have a problem or a question about GGB, I first search an answer in existing topics of the forum.

And sometimes, in a topic about the same problem of mine, I see things like that :

"Hello, I have a problem/question ... bla bla bla ..."

"Thank you very much Mr X, your solution works perfectly ...."

BUT the answer of Mr X doesn't appear in the discussion.

So, I could have a solution for my problem ... but no, I have to post a similar topic in the forum ...

Best regards,

Pierre

Bonjour Pierre,

I'm sad about this, but there's nothing we can do about it. The user deleted his posts, and this is a right that we all have on the Web. So there's nothing we can do about this. You might try to retrieve them by using cached pages on the Internet, if you have the right tools or know the sites which allow you to retrieve such information, but this doesn't always work.

Buon giorno Simona,

Thank you for your explanation.

So, nothing to do against freedom :) (joke, of course)

Beh, "Natale" è una volta all'anno ;).

is it possible to show a message that shows a post will be moderated before it appears in the forum. Now there's a message in the FAQ, but of course at first you think your post doesn't show up after posting it.

Hello Chris,

You can see this message in "Recent activity" in "My topics" pages :

Nevertheless, since 2 months, my topics appear directly without going through the moderation phase.

Regards,

Pierre

O thanks, I presumed people didn't see this, since some posted their stuff numerously. So that's OK.Administrators can change your status to allow users that proved yet to be 'reliable' not to pass along the waiting que. So good for you that you proved it!

Yes, I usually mark users as Trusted as long as I see that their posts are not abusive/spam etc.. but matter-of-factly related to GeoGebra. This saves moderation time for us and a useless waiting time for them. I hope other moderators do the same.

When I search for an item I only got dutch results since it's the language in which I'm logged in. If I remember a similar question has been asked before (in whatever language) I won't find it if it wasn't a question in dutch with dutch keywords.

Please use Google for the search. It's currently much more complete than the built-in search engine ;)

Some year ago, we had here the possibility to send private messages. Give it back!

Agree, totally

Concordo pure io.

Il messaggio privato è appunto molto simile all'email.

@frndmrsl I'm just trying to collect ideas and pass them to the Team. I have no decisional influence, just my (our) voice.

  • the possibility to privately manage my own posts, like giving them some keywords or groups in order to find old answers which had consumed a lot of time and effort (i have to click through a lot of posts to find the interesting ones)
  • the possibility to change some posts afterwards (like in the old forum) in order to correct some mistakes/errors (after some days)
  • more BB-Codes like color, font-size, latex, embedding ...
  • better tags for the better/helpfull posts in order to reach further answers on the same field with ease (maybe possibility to suggest additional tags or to vote to remove certain tags on some posts)
  • the possibility for users to display their own confidence in GGb in order to give suitable answers
  • increasing the file limit per post (sometimes three pictures/files are not enough)
  • maybe allow tutorial/cooperative-threads on which multiple experienced users can work on one specific (in depth) thread e.g. animating (not the wiki that should be a place without workarounds or complicated solutions) (in order to provide small high knowledge posts in contrast to mega-threads) ... other possibility might to hide minor comments or mark key comments
  • the StackExchange forums have some of those features and some further nice ones
  • dark-mode-theme?

Good ideas. From my point of view, allowing users to modify their posts can create issues. Like people saying one thing, then later deleting it and changing it with another one. It's a no-no for me. (I know -some of- my onions...)

It's just fine to add a further post explaining what the user missed in his previous post, or why he changed his mind.

Usually Admins/Mods do that.

Honestly I don't know if a user can change the status of an answer, since I have administrative rights and my interface is slightly more powerful than yours.

I always suggest to start a new thread when further (and different) questions arise while working on a problem, so for other users it's easier to find out the answer to a similar problem that they have.

About "Best answer"... well, I never use it. Since most of the times all you here come out with nice and different solutions, all of them worth a look at. And also, because I like that people reads the thread and learns how the solution was obtained, instead of just copying the first file they find as "best answer" that doesn't make them understand how to solve a similar problem, whenever they'll have one.

The status 'answered' has a role mainly for diligent followers of the forum who try to answer not-answered questions. By marking 'answered' they don't have to open all and browse to all answers to find if a question is already been answered or not. 'Some' (this is a careful description)... people never answer when a clear answer is given to a clear question while others explicitly react when they got helped. Then it's a good thing that moderators can mark it as 'answered'Sometimes things being asked for are not included in GeoGebra, and then 'answered' can be not a satisfying reaction but a true one. And a third thing: sometimes a second question is raised upon an already answered question. I think it's not bad that moderators follow and moderate and sometimes deactivate the status 'answered' if its clearly so and there was a misjudgement. It's perhaps more easy for users to comment on this judgement than allowing anyone to reclassify anything.

  • remainders for questioners after a week/month of inactivity on one thread to ask them to mark threads as finished?

photo
2

Allow users to mark a subject as « favorite » and then allow to display their favorite subjects.

If it already exists I didn’t find it. The existing « heart » is a vote to what I know.

I would like:

  • Monospaced font inside a paragraph
  • Consistency in the separation between paragraphs (paragraph breaks, line breaks)

photo
2
  • Maybe a statistical evaluation of most visited posts/questions in order to build a FAQ or to improve the wiki with very good answers/tutorials? The problems of huge forums is that you have to read through a lot of answers that might contain all the same answers in slight variations.
  • Maybe improve the tag-system with a graph like linked system like the materials section?
