How to share applets

On March 7 I uploaded the applet “The Sum of the First n Natural Numbers - Dynamic Proof” to GeoGebra Tube. Two days later I saw it again in the “New Materials” section uploaded under a different name - Cristina. I don't believe the concept of sharing materials means erasing the name of the author and putting your own name on its place.

Can the applet be removed from her materials? I see at least one more of my applets there - “Positioning Fractions on the Number Line”.

It's important to be able to make copies of others' work (for example to embed in a website and be sure that it won't be edited/deleted)

It is acknowledged, see screenshot (although we need to make this more prominent, especially on the student sheet eg "Uploaded by x based on work by y")

Hi irinaboyadzhiev,

Like you I was surprised about seeing my applets under different authors.

I happily accepted the explanations :D

However I propose that another method (maybe need server programming) whereby by an author's applet once uploaded can be duplicated by Geogebra Tube, and acts as the source file for anyone who wants to link to this applet or embed it in his/her own site, or to download it for educational use.

If the author updates his applet (to remove errors or improve functionality of applet) , this duplicate is also updated and linked and downloadable.

If the author deletes his applet, the other users still have the link to the old file which is kept in Geogebra Tube as a "orphan" file/applet, specially marked as applet which was deleted/withdrawn by author but is still available to be linked or downloaded.

This way we avoid too many unintentional clones which may also affect the users who search and find too many of similar files.

Any comments from GGB Tube Admin?

Great idea, lewws. If fact, I think this is a great idea; it keeps the initial authorship intact and even allows personal copyright issues viable under the common license concept. IMHO.

Thanks murkle. I never looked under the “Show Details” link. In my opinion, the information hidden under it is of more value than the “Language” and the “Material Type” for example. Perhaps the last two can go under Show Details, and the Views, the Version and Derived Materials should be visible.

Hi all here,

I have no objections to others copying my applets or improving on it.

In fact I am happy they can be of help to others!

I agree too these users have good reason, but the concern is when GGB tube is filled with too many clones, it becomes hard for others who want to go there to choose applets of certain topics and find that many many applets fit the descriptions but turn out to be very minor or no modifications of each other.

It may be very frustrating to search through so many similar applets just to find a suitable one.

Please consider my earlier proposal in this thread

Have you ever liked an applet on GeoGebra Tube so much that you wished it was yours?

Well, I will tell you how you can make it yours :smiling_imp:

First make a copy of the material . This will create an entry under the “Show Details” link similar to this:

first

Then you make a copy of the copy. Under “Show Details” you will see this:

second

Works well! The lady that highjacked my applet just won the second prize with it at the ORBIT competition.

Hi irinaboyadzhiev,

I believe it was not intentional on the part of Cristina to submit to the Orbit competition, as the tag was merely copied over from yours.

Your applet has attractive and excellent user interface for young learners, all your hard work hidden behind the design!

Great job.

Hope the organizers see this and give the award to you, the original author.

:D

We noticed this late last night, and informed the competition organisers. You should be hearing from them soon.

ORBIT has acknowledged and corrected the award on there web site.

If you use and do not significantly change someones work, it is only polite to acknowledge the assistance even under the commons licensing.

This was a very unpleasant situation for me and I am sure it was also very unpleasant for the organizers of the ORBIT competition. We definitely need to improve the way applets are shared on GeoGbera Tube.

To avoid confusion, I suggest the authorship to be displayed all the time. This way under the uploaded applet instead of the text “shared by AAAA”, we would see the author’s name and then additionally: “modified by BBB”, or ”translated by BBBB”, or “copied by BBBB”.

I have had a similar problem to one mentioned by lewws. I found materials copied, for which I have no complaints especially as some were just translations, however, my latest version had some updates and bugs resolved. None of the copies are the latest version.

I also suggest that it is necessary for the "author" of copies to be automatically informed of updates to the original, however trivial.

Of course if copies of copies do not show the original author, then this problem needs to be resolved first :)
