GeoGebra tried to uninstall my entire Program Files folder

Solved

Operating system: Windows 8.1

Java version: 8 Update 45

Technically, I suppose it was just a regular folder that I installed many of my programmes in (Windows is installed on an SSD, so this occurred a separate HD from the operative system). The installed file I used was GeoGebra-Windows-Installer-5-0-143-0.exe and I downloaded and installed less than 2 hours ago.

When I chose installation folder, annoyingly a GeoGebra subfolder was omitted from the installation path when I selected a custom path (as most programmes, it wanted to install on my SSD, where the "real" program files folder is); so the GeoGebra files were placed in my program files folder, cluttering it up.

That's why I wanted to un-install and later re-install. However, when the the uninstaller began uninstalling, I noticed file paths that seemed horribly wrong; and indeed, after I had managed to stop it via the task manager, I see that GIMP 2 has been completely removed, as has a couple of computer games.

In on other words, I am not very happy right now.

Since I don't seem to be able to edit my posts; I should add that I used the the uninstall/change feature that comes with Windows, which I understand will try to engage the uninstaller that comes with the installed program, if any.

If deleting all files in the folder GeoGebra was installed to is an intended feature (like e.g. for Steam, which I just found out), I'd suggest, at the minimum, that a big warning is given if the string GeoGebra is not part of the installation path, and ask the user to verify e.g. with a new dialogue that the entire folder can be deleted.

Just SIGN UP to JOIN this topic because I want to say: THE SAME BUG JUST HAPPENED TO ME.

I wouldn't deny my installation might have a inappropriate location (i.e. not in a "Geogebra" folder), and that's why I want to reinstall the software.(Files everywhere)

And what's now? My ENTIRE PROGRAM FILES in D Drive IS DELETED.

God bless that I chose to install Geogebra in my D Drive, and there're only some "not-the-most-important" files and app, like some games, some "working software."

This problem should be seem MORE CRITICAL THAN A VIRUS. Please fix it (when uninstall only delete Geogebra-related files, or like @heptagon 's opinion: show a warning and ask, etc), otherwise I won't recommend this software to anyone else.

Sorry for the lack of response. We were not able to reproduce this with the default install folder, but it seems this may indeed happen when you set the installation path to a folder that contains other programs -- e.g. install GeoGebra directly to

C:\Program Files\

instad of

C:\Program Files\GeoGebraWe will try to tackle this problem soon.

Just replying here to say that this is still a problem. Half my Program Files folder was uninstalled as well. This is an unacceptable bug that you guys have known about for at least HALF A YEAR now and have not fixed. This is ridiculous, and I will recommend everyone I know never to touch this program with a ten-foot pole ever again.

The bug has been fixed for some months now (but we can't fix it for already-installed versions, sorry)
