Hallo zusammen,

Ich habe heute auf geogebra.com vergeblich versucht, den Unterschied zwischen Classic 5 und Classic 6 herauszufinden. Kann mir da jemand etwas dazu sagen? Und was soll man denn installieren? Die 5 oder die 6?

basically it's simple: they have the same possibilities, but the grahic users interface (GUI) is different. If you are mainly a user and you don't permanently need a menu, make less use of dialogs, longer conditional definitions etc you're fine with GG6. An extra of GG6 is the intelligent Inputfield that offers you the possibility to show the roots and extremas without having to defining them in extra commands. And finally the GUI looks like the app, instead of like another program.

GG5 is still preferred by autors who make use of advanced and longer commands, dynamic colors etc. since the dialogs show up as different windows, which you can displace or enlarge as much as you like, while in GG6 you always stay in the same screen and constanly have to drag the borders of the views and dialogs. So it's basically the question how do you use GeoGebra, and not what's difference in technical possibilities.

Thank you Chris. I wish I had seen your answer days ago. Most of the GeoGebra training material available in the English language is kind of a patchwork quilt so I rely on YouTube and various Internet downloads. I downloaded GeoGebra Classic v6, no issues, but always wondered why the YouTube videos showed Geogebra with a menu bar ( File, Edit, View,....) which I could not find in my version. Hidden menu? Tricky key combination involved? Really baffling. Following your remark I downloaded GeoGebra version 5 -- and the menu now appears! I don't known when version 6 was released but it seems that much of the YouTube stuff predates it. Thanks, Bill

GG6 was released about a year ago, so indeed much stuff predates it.

I find bugs in GG6 classic in the area of saving my work. Is GG6 already at a quality level to be used by main stream users?

Is there still development done for the GG5 classic version? If yes then I might want to return to GG5 classic again.

I assume all file formats are compatible between GG5 and GG6, right?

Yes, file formats are compatible between Classic 5 and 6. The development focus is on Classic 6 and the new apps (Graphing, Geometry,...) . If you experience bugs and know how to reproduce them, please post them here on the forum. If you have reasons to keep it private, please feel free to send bug reports to support@geogebra.org.

Alicia, thanks!

I wonder if there are any logfiles in GG classic that I could use to see hidden error messages or debug output in case of error. Some issues might be hard to reproduce and so far I have no debugging information about GeoGebra. I'd be happy to provide as much error details which I can find.

Thanks! Help is always appreciated. What usually helps us the most, is a detailed step-by-step description on how to reproduce.
