Geogebra 6 Windows 10 file association not working

gwhiffen shared this problem 2 years ago
Solved

Trying to double-click any of my .ggb files to auto-open Geogebra and the chose file only opens Geogebra and not the file.

Is there any way to avoid having to then go to 'File' and 'open' and then file the file etc.?

I've made sure that Windows 10 knows to open .ggb with Geogebra, but there seems to be something interrupting the usual process and my files won't initiate within Geogebra from file explorer.

Sorry, you'll need to use File -> Open

We have in the school Windows 10 and the classic Geogebra 6. The old .ggb files that we created in Geogebra 5 for the old Windows system are not opening by double clicking, as many have said. For now we open them using the open->file, etc. Also to save in our own folders we need to download and then move that copy to the folder we want. Is there a shorter way to do all this? That is saving it directly to where it was open? That is overwriting it with the new additions?

Last this new classic 6 looks like the old classic 5 for IPad, is there a way to see in Windows 10 the old format?

If you select Download as->ggb a dialog opens, showing a standard default name for the file.

Press the Save button and the usual Explorer dialog showing your local contents opens. Select the folder where you want to save your file and enter the desired filename.

Same issue on Linux.

It's a design choice that allows users to have both v.5 and v.6 working together.

Please use File->Open to open your files in v.6

A poor design choice IMHO.

Just went through the rigmarole of getting school to install v6!

Would have held back if I'd known it had such a major bug.... I struggle to think of any other program that offers file association then refuses to open the requested file!

Madness.

I mostly use v5 since v6 is very sluggish (but cute!)

If I absolutely need to use v6, I just go to the online app, here:

I have been struggling to understand v6 compatibility in windows 10. I could not log in using the app I downloaded. I can login and open the files only if I use online web page https://www.geogebra.org. Earlier, I used to save the activities directly into my computer and open them in the computer without any hurdles.. I could also share it as a geogebra file to my students and they can save it in their computers once they install the app. But now it all works only online!

Another question: I created an activity file in v6. I was thinking of uninstalling v6 and going back to v5. How can I get this file into v5?

You can save your files offline by either choosing "Save" and then continue without logging in, or by selecting "Download as" -> ggb. ggb files are compatible in both directions between v5 and v6, so you should be able to open them without troubles. Btw, you can install v5 without uninstalling v6.

Well, this is the first program I know of that does not load the associated file correctly.

And I'm sure this could be improved.

Although this post has been marked as "not a problem", this is a yes problem!

And it has to be solved.

On Windows 7, there is no file association either. Further, GeoGebra does not appear in the Start Menu. How do I launch the program?

Have a look here https://help.geogebra.org/t...

It should be the same in Win 7.

Then pin ggb to the taskbar or wherever you need.

This is very frustrating. Instead of just double-clicking the file, I have to go to my desktop, open geogebra, click File->Open, then look for the file on my computer to open it. This makes the entire work-process much more cumbersome.

For now I switch back to Geogebra 5. I hope that in Geogebra 7 the developers will realize their mistake and bring back the good old "click to open" feature.

Please check the latest version (GeoGebra 6.0.533.0). File associations should be working now.

Well I've tried it mate and it doesn't seem to actually open the clicked on gbb file. Geogebra itself opens, but doesn't load the sketch.

To reproduce this: downloaded the latest version. Since it's an executable already I created a geogebra folder in my Programs folder and stuck it there. Pinned it to the start menu as well. Checked it ran. Then right clicked a gbb file, open as, search for the foleder and geogebra. Everything became associated, but as I said it doesn't load the file.

Not sure what I should try?

OOPS hold on, the file says it's an installer??? But where is it installing to? Let me check!!!

Ahaaa C:\Users\yournamehere\AppData\Local\GeoGebra_6

I chose the geogebra.exe and it's all working fine... well done

(Why not install to the usual program files though?)

@gfmoore: You need to install the .msi if you want to get it installed in C:\Program Files.
