Do Students need to create an account in order to access an already started class?

Today, while working synchronously with students in a class, several students kept getting bumped out. They were asked for their name again and then I saw two of them in my dashboard.
Do I need to have them create accounts so they can get back into their saved work?
The same question 
They just have to get the code of your class. They don't have to log in with a GG account.
